Marine Engineering Diploma Program was introduced at the Polytechnic Ungku Omar (PUO) in the year 1972 by the Government of Malaysia in collaboration Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA), an agency of the Japanese under the Colombo Plan.
The Japanese government has provided equipment and learning facilities worth 1.3 million dollars and five Japanese advisors. Malaysia Government has provided basic amenities such as workshops, laboratories, local trainers, basic equipment and utility expenses.
This program covers the operation and maintenance of a ship, Power plant and construction-related equipment and naval architecture. The program takes 3 years 6 months require students to undergo industrial training for 3 months and naval exercises on a merchant ship for 6 months.
