The Department of Civil Engineering

It is one of the 8 academic departments at Ungku Omar Polytechnic. This department is led by the Head of the Department and assisted by 92 highly qualified and skilled academic and support staff. In line with the country’s aspirations to become a developed country, this department is committed to producing highly skilled graduates that will meet the needs of the industry. The programs offered consist of Diploma in Civil Engineering, Diploma in Geomatics, Diploma in Architecture, and a Skills Certificate (Civil Construction) for students with special needs. Starting in September 2013, the Polytechnic’s Home-grown Degree program i.e. Bachelor of Civil Engineering Technology with Honours was introduced and received a full MQA Accreditation certificate.

Efforts to empower Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) are carried out through direct skills training from theoretical and practical aspects, enhanced by increasing direct involvement of industry players. In addition, sharing the skills and expertise of teachers and students when carrying out various programs including community service programs will further enhance and produce a generation of high-quality Industrial Revolution 4.0 leaders with autonomy and accountability. The approach in practicing Industrial Training sessions in the final semester for all diploma students is to increase the graduate’s marketability level and readiness to face the world of work.

The Work Base Learning (WBL) learning method adopted by the Bachelor of Civil Engineering Technology program for two semesters emphasizes the actual learning or practical methods of the industry. The e-learning systems is also implemented through the use of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality applications, especially for courses involving Building Information Management (BIM). Meanwhile, the empowerment of staff skills is carried out periodically as needed through highly skilled and professional courses as well as opportunities to undergo the Lecturer’s Industrial Inclusion (SIP) in the industry.

The department started making strides in the field of internationalization by organizing international programs in 2019. In 2021, the department will continue to organize international-level seminars together with Universitas Muhammadiyah Buton, Indonesia even during the pandemic. Continuing this internationalization effort, the seminar International Conference on Research and Innovation in Sustainable Cities 2022 on 26-29 September 2022.
